Blonde, double and triple are the classic Belgian styles. Blonde beers are smooth drinking and often straw yellow in color. Accessible and good against thirst. You taste well the grain with which the beer was brewed, it is a bit bitter and somewhat sweet. Blonde beer, of course, we know as the beer that most specialty beer drinkers once started with. A traditional Belgian type of beer that brewers around the world have embraced.

Strong golden ale
Also a blonde beer? No, definitely not. Although a strong golden ale also has a (very slightly darker) yellow color, that is the main similarity. The beer has much more carbon dioxide than a blonde beer, which directly affects the taste. Much more powerful and bitter, with the sweetness more in the background. Not for the faint hearted....

Tripel
Westmalle launched its first tripel in 1935. So the beer style is not as old as labels sometimes lead you to believe. A tripel beer is usually golden yellow in color and often tastes bitter with typical notes of some banana or other yellow fruit and spiciness in the background. Tripels have lots of carbonation and a full, bitter and dry finish. They are the heaviest beers in the typically Belgian styles blonde, double and triple.

Double
The term "double" as a beer style refers to the malt deposit (the amount of malt used to brew a batch of beer). This is double that of a single beer (a table beer for monks), but a third less than that of a triple. Dubbels are darker in color because of the slightly darker malt used. You taste caramel and often some chocolate, yellow fruit and candy.

Strong dark ale
Strong dark ale is an interesting beer type. A bit between shore and ship. Stronger than a double but not a quadruple. Dark but not a stout or porter. Usually strong dark ales are brown or reddish-brown in color and you taste a lot of caramel, a little bit of roasted malt and some candy sweetness.
