India Pale Ale (IPA) is a beer style that is more bitter and fruity than most other beers. The greater amount of hops in the brew accounts for this. IPAs were intended in the heyday of the British colonial empire for seafarers on their way to India. The journey took some time and the use of lots of hops made the beer drinkable for longer on the road. Today, it is primarily a fresh, (citrus) fruity thirst quencher.
