Barrel aged beers

Barrel aged beers

Barrel aged beers do not fall under any particular beer style. Their common denominator is that they were filled into wooden barrels after the brewing process and aged further there.

Stouts, barley wines, quadruples and tripels are the most barrel-aged beer types. Several breweries are renowned for their barrel-aged beers, such as De Molen Brewery, Frontaal and De Struise Brouwers.

The brewer gives his beer a certain period of time (usually anywhere from three months to a year) of solitary confinement in an oak barrel that previously held, for example, whiskey, bourbon, rum or wine. The flavors of the liquor and wood soak into the beer, giving it an extra layer of flavor. Barrel aged beers are brewed for quiet enjoyment and often taste great with some older cheese (with a nice chutney on the side, for example).
